Originally this boat ferried cars and passengers between the mainland of San Diego and its outlying islands. It was retired from service in San Diego in 1969 when a bridge was built.

Seen closer, this ferry is clearly beginning to fall apart. The second deck salon has collapsed mid-ship. Although it may also be collision damage.

Originally the lower deck was used to haul cars. It was moved to Washington State and remained in service there until 1974 when it was retired for good. Since retirement the lower deck had been walled over.

Here the damage to the upper deck can be seen more closely. The black interior is the result of a fire that occurred while the ferry was being converted into a restaurant.

The Door Still Open

Despite having been retired, burned and abandoned, the San Diego is still a handsome ship. Perhaps someone will be inspired to save and restore this Ferry. After all, despite its awful shape, its front door remains open.
