Wood Line 2011, Artist: Andy Goldsworthy, British Artist, By Lovers Lane, Presidio Grounds, San Francisco, California
Step inside the dark forest, and the wood line first appears to curve in the distance. Give your eyes a moment to adjust and step further inside the forest.
Just inside the forest, a line of wood could be seen running along the forest floor. If you were not
looking for it, that wood line would be easy to overlook while walking along the Lovers Lane trail just
outside the forest.
Once fully inside and able to gaze downhill, the vast sweeping design of the Wood Line becomes visible. It forms series of long S-curves down the forest floor between stands of tall eucalyptus trees.
Up close, the Wood Line is composed of telephone pole sized logs, somehow made to curve.
People walked down the path formed by the Wood Line. They give the Wood Line scale to witness how truly huge
it is.
A closer view of the Wood Line and the s-curve along the forest floor.
Some folks walked the Wood Line the opposite direction, uphill.
Near the bottom end of the Wood Line, looking backward uphill at folks in the distance.
Walking the Wood Line can distort one's view of reality. Here the forest appears to lean, and if resisting the curve of the Wood Line.
A view from the bottom looking back at the Wood Line. One person used the Wood Line as a trail over which to
walk a dog.
The end of the Wood Line at the bottom of its run, just vanished into the forest floor. Over this last bit of
trail, just over the rise, one encountered a street and buildings.
