Quêbec Libre!, (Vaillancourt Fountain)
|
The Quêbec Libre! (Vaillancourt Fountain) was located in Justin Herman Plaza, just across the street from the
Ferry Building in San Francisco. In the afternoon, the shadows of the Embarcadero Center towers shade part of the fountain.
|
When operating over most of the year, the fountain provides a constant cascade of water recycled from its knee deep basin.
|
The fountain occupies one full corner of the plaza and is as much an image of the aftermath as it is a representation of
the contemporary world gone astray.
|
Not just a fountain, but a place to explore. Stairs behind the fountain provided safe access to platforms in the center.

A view of the interior showing its dramatic interplay of water. Notice the foot path just visible in the lower right.

Just to give a sense of scale, here are two people walked the path inside the fountain.

A sign on one edge of the fountain identified it as:

Here was one view looking down at the interior of the fountain from a platform inside it.

Here is a closeup shot of one end of the fountain. The end just happened to be high up in the interior of the fountain.
|
Behind the fountain was a pedestrian path and a stairway that led up and into the inside of the fountain.

The path that led into the interior of the fountain as viewed from one of the platforms accessible form stairways
behind.

A photographer in the plaza took a photograph of the fountain.
