Soma, Art By The Flaming Lotus Girls
The sculpture was located on two wooden platforms between the Ferry Building and Pier 14. From this angle
it was difficult to tell that it represented a human axion.
The wooden platforms that supported this SOMA sculpture by the Flaming Lotus Girls created extra seating.
Each arm of the sculpture ended in a light. Some of the lights were round while others were pointed.
The core of the art was a made up of pentagons and filled with a complex arrangement of electrical wires.
Another view of the sculpture looking toward the Bay Bridge. Notice how the lower part of both
trunks are covered in glass to prevent public access to the wiring.
A close up look at a few of the arm ends. Note the two different collars for the lights and the two different shapes for the lights.
Buttons controlled the lighting of the sculpture, but only at nighttime between the hours of
sunset and 2:00 a.m.
A sign on the sculpture read,

A joint in the overhead trunk where two pentagon faces join. Notice the amount of skilled
welding that went into the creation of this sculpture.
Lights also adorned the trunk of the sculpture. All the trunk lights were flat, round and spiked.
One of the lights near the base had been broken off. This is what the circuit behind the light looked like.
Here was the sculpture in context with its surroundings. Off to the far left was the entrance to pier 14. To the right was Herb Caen Way, the wide sidewalk alongside the Embarcadero. To the immediate left was San Francisco Bay.
