Oakland Zoo Carousel, Outside The Oakland Zoo
Just three images repeated around the top of the carousel. One was that of a gorilla as shown here.
The image of a tiger was just one of three that decorated the top of the carousel.
The image of an elephant was just one of three images that decorated the top of the carousel and repeated
around the top edge.
Three of the animals to ride on the carousel were a tiger, and next to that a cheetah, and furthest from the
camera the zebra.
Two of the animals to ride were a zebra nearest, and an American eagle just behind it.
An elephant with its trunk held high in the air was one of the animals to ride.
Only the kids that actually rode animals had to pay. The parents that just stood could ride for free.
The carousel operator walked around the carousel to inspect it before energizing it to rotate.
That operator wore a Hawaiian shirt that day.
The carousel was a popular ride because even one year old children could ride with the help of parents.
Fabric curtains that could be lowered to close the carousel, were rolled up and swagged
behind the decorative carousel top.
One of the taller animals on the carousel was the giraffe, here with a blue harness around its head.
A spherical safety mirror was alongside the fence next to the carousel. Its convex surface provided a view
of the entire carousel in context.
