Ketchikan was built on hills and cliffs alongside a natural harbor. Rather than leveling the hills, houses were built up high and required stairs to reach them.

The hillside was so steep that stairs replaced a road. The stairs running straight up were called, "Barber Street." Part way up, another street took off left. It was called, "Bayview Street."

A short concrete staircase led to a parking lot. It then continued as a wooden staircase to reach houses up on a hill.
