State Capital State Park, In Salem, Oregon
A modest sign marked the eastern entry to State Capitol State Park. That said read:
Two benches were available for the weary but not for anyone to sleep on.
A short 2x4 in the center of each
prevented anyone tall from lying comfortably on either bench.
Autumn leaves decorated the ground around the benches giving them a feeling of peace.
The park was set upon by several dramatic trees. Here, for example, was a tree with branches bowed just
right to create benches upon which humans could sit.
A small bandstand was to one side in the park. The base of the bandstand stairs was the perfect place
to gaze at a phone while protected from the glare of bare sky overhead.
A lone bench had been installed at the base of a tree with many thin branches radiating like sunbeams from
its thick trunk. Beyond that tree you can just make out the common parking lot.
A tree on a corner of the park was pruned in just such a way to hide it in plain sight. A bush near
its trunk aided in the illusion that it wasn't there.
Another bench installed near the north exit was next to a lamp post. Beyond the bench, two fire plugs guarded
a crosswalk.
A hint of one wing of the capitol building was just visible through the trees of State Capitol State Park.
Autumn was in full swing in November. All the trees that could lose their leaves were doing so in
bright fall colors. Note how the leaves covering the grass were densest under each tree.
