Horton Plaza, San Diego
|
Horton Shopping Mall was a huge open-air shopping center located in the heart of San Diego.
Vast stairs led to an interior plaza and to escalators and elevators once inside.
|
Across from a children's play area (The San Diego Kiddie Express) was a toy store that specialized
in dolls, aptly named, "Horton Toy & Doll."
|
The shopping mall was many levels tall with with balconies overlooking the central
plaza and entrance. Stores in this view included Chico's, 24 Hour Fitness, and Air Beds.

A detail shot of one of the many lamps lining the walls. Here was a lamp holder in the shape
of a small dragon-like fish.
|
Here and there scattered around the shopping mall were tables and chairs for the weary
to rest or to pause and repackage their recently purchased goods. Note the dragon-like
fish lamps on the walls.

Interior windows formed views that resembled hung art paintings.
Here was a view of the Walking Store as an art object.
|
The interior was done up in stunning designs created from many small terra cotta tiles.

An obelisk behind the shopping center was uncredited but appears to have been the work of artist Joan Brown

Here is a view of the back entrance to Macy's from the traffic turn-around behind the shopping mall.

The back side of the shopping mall with a line of taxis waiting to pick up shoppers after shopping. A mural by Kaiser Permanente read, "Life Is A Gym."

A Westin Hotel was adjacent to the Horton Plaza shopping mall.
