Mirrored Balls Sculpture, Artist: Olafur Eliasson, Chase Center, Terry A Francois Blvd and 16th Street, San Francisco, California
Olafur Eliasson built and installed
five large stainless steel balls and placed them at the intersection of 16th Street and Terry A. Francois Boulevard on a
street level plaza of the Chase Center.
Each ball had a mirrored face with all the mirrors facing inward, thus creating a walk-through house of mirrors.
People walking around the Mirrored Ball Art lent it a sense of scale. The balls were really large.
The balls were made of burnished stainless steel. That surface also created reflections, but those reflections were like looking at the world through fog.
One mirror reflected pedestrians walking along the sidewalk. That mirror also reflected a piece of a second mirror.
When viewed from the correct angle, and infinite tunnel of reflected mirrors became possible.
The trick was to take this picture without reflecting the camera.
Other people were reflected in unexpected poses and in front of other distant mirrors.
In this shot, the photographer could be seen wearing a white hat and four mirrors deep.
The mirrored balls also cast oblong shadows on the plaza. The round mirrors also reflected oval sunlight onto the plaza.
