The elevated platform as viewed from the side. The wire screen that created the wall, separating the humans from the cougar, was only slightly out of focus.

A sign on the wire wall described:

Cougar-safe
zone
What should you do if
you encounter a cougar?

Don't run --a cougar's first
instinct is to chase.

Instead, open your arms wide and make yourself seem big. Stand tall and speak loudly but calmly. Maintain eye contact and don't turn your back. Convince the cougar that you are too big or dangerous to bother with.
