Outside, the White Pass & Yukon Rail Train
The train had stopped on the dock where it waited for folks to exit from ships to board
the train for a ride to Canada and back.
The lead cars of the train seemed to disappear into the forest as the train rounded a long
curve.
The train passed by a forest that descended steeply down into a river gorge. Notice the low overhanging
clouds that masked the rugged mountains from view.
It took three diesel engines to pull the train up the steep route and over the pass into
Yukon in Canada.
The train did not cross that bridge until it got to it. This was the new all-steel bridge that replaced the old wood
and steel bridge
A tunnel had been dug through the rock of a mountain so that the train could more easily reach
the summit.
The summit was mostly rock and snow with a low covering of green bushes. Note that this was
the summer so the snow was mostly melted into puddles.
Each passenger car was heated with an oil stove at the front. This kept the inside of the cars
at a chilly rather than cold temperature.
The mountains just outside the windows of the train rose dramatically high into the clouds and fog.
The engines homeward bound back to the docks and back down to sea level. Notice how lush the forests
appeared in summer.
