Railroad, Of The White Pass & Yukon Route
The front of a sleek black old engine built of steel and rivets. The cow catcher on its front
was curved to remove snow.
The cab part of the old engine was not well cared for. It was losing its paint to the elements
and was exhibiting a great deal of rust.
A freight car was attached to the sleek black engine with its rusting cab. On the bed of the freight
car rested two boxes, one orange and one gray both wrapped with steel cables.
A passenger car of the type used on the Skagway to Canada tour. The "W." and "P." stood
for "White Pass." The number 316 was the car number.
The end of each passenger car was an outdoor platform. Notice the steel plate that could
swing up (as now) to allow use of the steps, or could be swung down to create a level
platform.
In the old days, politicians would stand on just such a platform to give speeches at
each town along a rail line.
In addition to a number, each passenger car was also named. This car, for example, was named
"Lake Bare Loon."
A siding along the Skagway to Canada route showed maintenance equipment parked on rails.
A pair of "White Pass," diesel engines were parked on a siding in the maintenance yard.
An old steam engine was on a siding and was generating a full head of steam.
A couple of ore cars were parked on a siding. They were a faded orange color that fit well into
the surrounding forest.
A old fallen engine lay on the ground alongside the tracks. It was rusting and punctured with holes.
On the White Pass & Yukon route, a Skagway tour train could be seen transiting the cliff face
of a mountain near Skagway.
One of the passenger cars, number 400, the "Michael J. Heney," was parked alongside a lovely
mountain lake at the summit end of the route.
The track upon which the White Pass & Yukon route traveled. It used wooden ties in a rock
bed. The rail sections were coupled with steel plates and bolts, not welded. These tracks gave
the train its old-fashioned clickety-clack rhythm while riding it.
