Dog Eared Books Mural 2001, Artist: Hawley Hussey, As A Form Of Found Art, 900 Valencia Street, San Francisco, California
The sign for "Dog Eared Books" was at the corner of 20th Street and Valencia Street in San Francisco, California.
It featured an abstract depiction of a dog for the "Dog Eared" part of the sign.
The border of the 20th Street side of the building was wrapped in a mural showing many used books
on shelves.
Titles and author names were painted on the spines of the books in the mural.
Below the books was a line of glowing faces, each backed by angel wings.
The front of the Dog Eared Books store, at 900 Valencia Street, also had windows wrapped in art showing
shelves and stacks of painted books.
One column on the front of Dog Eared Books illustrated symbols from books. A king's crown, playing card suits,
a curtained window, and a stool with a martini on it. An arrow by the stool pointed north.
Below the stool was a winged snake wearing a crown.
Two examples of original art were on display inside Dog Eared Books just behind the glass.
One showed a face gazing out at the street. The other showed a girl holding a blue balloon.
A possible signature was painted between books at the front of the store.
It read, "*Baroe Qwilts.. 19."
Much searching could not turn up an artist with that name.
A closer view of the books drawn on the border of Dog Eared Books' windows.
It more clearly illustrated the placement of titles and author names on the books.
The actual signature was buried among the book titles. It read:
Junk was arranged behind the topmost window at the front of the Dog Eared Books store.
The arrangement of Christmas lights, a bird, stars, and dried plants created an impression of art.
